The number of smartphones shipped to India grew 35% year over year to 15.2 million units in 2012 with Samsung, Nokia and Sony leading the market, according to a new report. Overall, 221.6 mn mobile phones were shipped between Jan- Dec 2012, the report by Cyber Media Research said. Nokia remains the number one manufacturer with overall 21.8% market share while South Korean electronics giant Samsung and homegrown mobile company Micromax are at second and third spot with 13.7% and 6.6% market share respectively.
When it comes to smartphone category, Samsung beats other players with close to 43% market share in the segment. Nokia and Sony stand at second and third position with 13.3 and 8.2% market share respectively.
The India smartphones market during second half of 2012 saw a rise in shipments by 75.2% over and above the first half of 2012 number. During second half of 2012, smartphone shipments stood at 8.1% of the country’s total mobile handset shipments. While BlackBerry was at third spot during 1H 2012, Sony Mobiles displaced the former if we examine numbers for the full CY 2012.
Unlike 2011, 2012 saw increase of more than 38 millions of mobile shipments, an increase of 20.8% over 2011. Feature phone segment registered growth of about 19.9% in calendaar year 2012 over previous year.
