India to have 21 lakh public WiFi hotspots by 2021

There are 3.06 lakh hotspots in the country right now and the count is expected to reach up to 21 lakh by 2021 as per a report by DigiAnalysys. Government schemes, both state and central, could drive these numbers.

Government-backed projects like BharatNet, Smart City and RailTel along with private operators like Reliance Jio and QuadGen, etc offer these hotspots currently. Private Telecom operators will add over a million public Wifi hotspots by the end of this year.

The Govt. aims to install WiFi hotspots in gram panchayats, colleges, smart cities, railway stations of smaller towns, retail outlets, etc. in the next two years.
