Indian Rupee Symbol Added to Unicode!

Indian Rupee Symbol, was announced in the month of July and has now been officially added to Unicode.

The latest version of Unicode has announced 2000+ new characters, including over 1,000 additional symbols, 603 additional characters for African language support and of course, the Indian Rupee Symbol.

“The repertoire for Unicode Version 6.0 includes all the characters of the Second Edition, plus one additional character U+20B9 INDIAN RUPEE SIGN, which is still in the process of addition to 10646. “

Applause for Indian government for getting it so damn quick! The symbol will also be included in the Indian Standards, viz. 13194:1991 – Indian Script Code for Information Interchange (ISCII), through an amendment to the existing list by the Bureau of Indian Standards. The ISCII specifies various codes for Indian languages for processing on computers along with the key-board lay outs (though the implementation will take its own sweet time).
