Internet threatening democracy? UK Electoral Commission wants law changes.

In the wake of the recent Cambridge Analytica scandal, reports of Facebook misuse by elements in Russia during the U.S. Presidential election and all-round concern worldwide on manipulation of democratic processes by digital platforms – particularly social media – the UK's Electoral Commission has published a report calling for reforms in electoral law that account for the rapid changes in the technological landscape.
Suggested reforms include 'imprints' that help clearly identify the source of digital campaigns, greater scrutiny of funds being used for such campaigns and bigger penalties for violations of rules. The commission is also currently investigating whether a number of pro-'Brexit' groups broke spending laws during their campaigns leading up to the EU Referendum.
