iPhone isn’t a super hit product in India, but Apple cannot afford to ignore the great Indian telecom market, especially post 3G launch.
WSJ reports that Apple is in talks with CDMA operators, Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices for launching iPhone on CDMA network (iPhone is available on Airtel and Vodafone GSM networks).
This is interesting as Apple is rumored to be launching a CDMA version of iPhone next year (on Verizon network).
Coming back to the Indian market, I am not sure if CDMA is the right way to go, as GSM users are increasing at a much higher rate and are the right user segment, as opposed to CDMA (iPhone price in India continues to hover around Rs. 30,000).
Aside, it’s important to note that WSJ always gets Apple news correct – so look forward to CDMA launch.
