Apple is trying to play catchup with Samsung in India by beefing up its partner distribution network. The company is partnering with “specialised distribution companies” in India to sell iPhones. The idea is to reach out to a wider audience, especially Indians who live in thousands of smaller towns. The device maker has already tied up with the local arm of technology distributor Ingram Micro Inc and Redingdon (India) Limited which has 12,000 small partners in the country.
Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO had said that the company is working hard to get an iPhone5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible. Mr Cook had earlier expressed reservations about selling in India as the company would have to navigate “multi tiered” distribution setups.
The Cupertino Company has has sold over five million of its new iPhone 5, in just three days after its launch on September 21.
