Looks like watching of live video on mobile is picking up slowly. DigiVive’s nexGTv mobile TV, which bagged the official mobile streaming rights of Pepsi IPL 2013 from master rights holder Times Internet, has said that customers consumed 2.6 million hours of Pepsi IPL 6 video content on the platform.

The IPL which was plagued by controversies towards the end of the tournament did not see a dip in the number of viewers, with nexGTv seeing 2.5 million unique users and 45 million hits in total, over the course of the two-month cricket tournament.

The series saw an average of 0.8 million hits every day and apart from live streaming also had video-on-demand content which was consumed in plenty.   There was a 75% share of live streaming while video on demand took the remaining share.

The average content viewed per user per day  was 20 minutes, suggesting that Indian customers are finally taking to live streaming on mobile devices.

DigiVive says that with the tournament they saw a boost in the uptake of the app, averaging at 45,500 new downloads daily  and that it now has over 13 million users.

A few weeks back, it was reported that at the half way stage of the tournament, the combined viewership of IPL online across both www.boxtv.com & www.youtube.com/indiatimes recorded a 52% growth viewership over 2012 (75.2M vs 49.3M last year). The combined viewership of users watching highlights and clips also saw a whopping 480% growth in watch hours over 2012.

During IPL5, Times Internet Limited recorded around 113 million views, a rise of 56 % in contrast of IPL4 (2011) that had witnessed 72 million views.

A recent report by comScore had stated that online video consumption in India had doubled in the past two years.
