Exclusive : IRCTC Silently Shuts Down Its Ecommerce Portal?

IRCTC had floated a tender for the Rs 1000 cr project, but its ecommerce site never really picked up.

IRCTC launched its ecommerce portal, shop.irctc.co.in with a lot of fanfare. IRCTC partnered with Yebhi, which provided a white label solution to enable e-commerce on IRCTC’ site.

The site has been down for the last 2-3 days and surprisingly, none of the contact channels seem to work (email bounced, the number is temporarily out of service).

IRCTC Shop : Shutting Down?
IRCTC Shop : Shutting Down?

We have reached out* to IRCTC and Yebhi for clarifications (aside, Is Yebhi shutting down its electronics category?).

Even if IRCTC’s shutdown is a temporary glitch (can any ecommerce company afford to?), IRCTC’s ecommerce venture had no serious takers and competition from established players like Flipkart/Snapdeal etc ruined the party.

In short, no one seems to be missing IRCTC’s ecommerce service, which is an irony because IRCTC has 2.7 crore active users. IRCTC has logged peak transaction volumes of nearly 4 lakh ticket bookings per day on its website — more than 10 times Flipkart’s volume (via).

The failure of IRCTC’s ecommerce venture could be a case study for product managers and marketers.
