A lot is happening at IRCTC and the latest development is thier new UI. IRCTC is beta testing its new UI which is suppose to be faster and better. Though we appreciate the efforts made but their is not much to look forward to in terms of performance of the new UI.
The site still fails to implement some of the basic speed optimization methods. We did a small test and here is a list that can be implemented immediately:
1. Combine all CSS files.
2. Minify JS files.
3. Enable Gzip compression the JS and CSS.
With all this done and implementation of CDN, probably the homepage load time would be reduced to half of the current time.
Also, the internal booking pages are AJAX based which could make it worse for slow connections. Once logged in, you cannot afford to press refresh button anywhere as that would bring you to base 1, again.
Whatever said and done the site would only win true appreciation if it can solve the 8AM blues of the users. For those unaware, the IRCTC site is mostly down between 7:45 to 8:30 AM everyday due to overload of traffic for Tatkal bookings. You need to be very lucky to book a Tatkal ticket online during those hours.
Test the new UI and voice your views.
