ISRO’s NaVIC positioning system gets a nod for global commercial usage

3GPP, a global body responsible for developing protocols for mobile telephony, has approved ISRO’s global positioning system, NaVIC.

The approval means that mobile handset makers will now be able to make NaVIC compatible navigation devices and smartphones.

This homegrown GPS will be soon used as a national standard by Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India as well.

NaVIC uses seven satellites for position system along with one for messaging and will be able to provide accurate location information to users in India and in the region of 1500 km around the country.
