Karnataka government has launched the Mobile One app, which was inaugurated by the president of India, Pranab mukherjee. The app claims to have 4500 services integrated in to it.
With the launch of this app, Karnataka has become the first state to launch a unified mobile platform for citizen services which delivers services from both government and private sector through an open platform, making it world’s Largest Multi-channel Mobile Services Platform.
The services do not necessarily require a smartphone and can be availed on low end phones through integrated voice response (IVR), SMS or Mobile Web by dialing 161 on their phones.
Technically speaking, the app isn’t a native app, but a web wrapper. The app allows users to pay utility bills, property taxes, book railway and bus tickets, file income tax, m-passport seva, apply for driving licenses etc. it can also be used to notify officials about grievances and ill-functioning of services.
Payments on the Mobile One service are accepted through credit/debit cards or through payment wallets like RuPay or Karnataka Wallet which was launched along with the app.
The Karnataka Mobile One will integrate digital media and advertising going forward to enable it to be a self-sustaining model to pay for some select services via advertising revenue, user fees and subscription models. Payments through a variety of modes including debit cards, credit cards, online wallet, PayGov are enabled. Payments are also integrated through multiple methods of online payments by citizens including introduction of the “Karnataka Wallet”.
The app was developed by IMI Mobile, major global mobile solutions provider. IMI mobile had recently acquired Textlocal, a self-service, cloud based, mobile messaging business. Textlocal caters to bulk messaging solutions which would form an integral part for the Mobile One services.
Also, Practo, a search engine that helps discover doctors have announced partnership with the Karnataka government in the MobileOne initiative. Practo integrates with the mobile one app to help citizens find the best doctors.
