Japanese messaging app Line on Saturday said that it has crossed 10 million users in India and also said that Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif will be their first ever brand ambassador.
“It is a grand moment for us, our user number has reached 10 million in last 3 months,” the company which has over 200 million users worldwide said. Line said that it wants to reach 20 million users in India by the end of the year. According to one estimate, India has nearly 70 million smartphone users.
The messaging app, which launched in India a little over 3 months ago said it got nearly 5 million users in the first 3 weeks. The company has been spending big money on television advertising. The ads are targeted towards the youth, widely perceived as the most active set of Line users in India.
Line has also partnered with Sony to pre-load the application on Sony smartphones. It has also entered into a content agreement with Sony to provide music on the app. Actress Katrina Kaif also endorses Sony products.
Whatsapp, BlackBerry Messenger and WeChat are currently the leading third party messengers in India. Bollywood actress Parineeti Chopra is the brand ambassador for WeChat. In June, Indian messaging app hike said it has over 5 million users. WeChat recently roped in Argentina football star Lionel Messi for its TV campaign in India. India overtook Japan to become the 3rd largest smartphone market in the world, said a report in June.
