Eat This : “Make In India” Logo Was Not Designed By An Indian Firm

Disclosed under RTI, the logo of the much-hyped Make in India initiative was designed by Weiden+Kennedy India Limited (which is headquartered at Portland).

Make In India : Was It Made In India?
Make In India : Was It Made In India?

Founded in Portland, Oregon, it is one of the largest independently owned advertising agencies and was hired by Govt of India for Rs 11 crore for advertising and promotion of the campaign.

Why is this news?

Make in India has largely been about products and manufacturing companies (and not service companies). If the government doesn’t trust Indian / local services companies (which have been around for donkey years), why expect change of heart for product business then?

  • Pretty sure 95% of the Indian “Design” companies wouldn’t have delivered a quality logo. They’re still following 90’s design trends. Those able to file government tenders are worst. IT and Design in India need to put a great focus on quality and aesthetics to stand in front of what other countries are delivering.

  • The logo was designed by Indian arm of the foreign company… So it is indeed made in india ly.. We fail to understand what is “Make in India”…

fa example, when we signed deal to make 200 russian helicopters in India under make in india, does it mean that we ll do R&D and do the entire design from the scratch? No, we merely manufature the helicopters by transfer of technology…

“Make in India” has two parts namely,
    1. If possible we develop new technology from the scratch with entire R&D being done in India.
    2. We manufacture the goods/product (which we earlier used to buy as end product from foreign countries) in India, by making those companies to enter into tie up with indian counter parts, thereby creating employment for engineers and other technicians…

In the second one, we dont do the R&D, we just do the transfer of technology.. So clearly this Logo designing is done by a Indian subsidiary of Portland, Oregon-based Wieden+Kennedy (ofcourse Indians work in its Indian subsidiary)..

  • Wel u r right.. Indian companies may be bad.. but not the quality of indian working in other indian subsidiaries of foreign companies…

  • It has been designed by Indian arm of a foreign company. What’s wrong in that?

Now with globalized economy, you can’t work only with your own companies by sidelining others.

As long as they are operating in India by providing employment and generating revenue,we should not be worried much..
