MeitY may not include e-commerce data in the privacy bill, at least for now. Since the current draft focuses only on personal data privacy and security, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade’s pitch to consider localization of data generated by the e-commerce companies may be rejected.
According to the ministry, since non-personal data needs to have a broad consultation process, it should be addressed separately. It further says that once a data authority is established under PDP legislation, it can set up rules for community or anonymized data.
DPIIT feels that making e-commerce data available to Indian startups will aid in local innovation.
