Homegrown cellphone company Micromax is planning to enter Russia and Romania as part of its international expansion plan.
Micromax is launching in Russia by the end of this year and is looking to enter Europe afterwards. It has also tied up with Russian search engine Yandex, the Hindu Businessline reported.
The company’s co-founder Rahul Sharma told the financial daily: Our end goal is to go global as an Indian hardware brand. I do not want to be seen as an Indian company anymore. We have tested waters in markets such as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and we are among the top three phone brands in both the markets.
Last week, the company hired Hollywood star Hugh Jackman to promote its Canvas range of phones. As I’d written earlier, launching in markets that have a strong patent protection system might not be the brightest thing to do right now.
Most smartphone patents are held by large corporations such as Apple, Nokia, Ericsson, Hewlett Packard and Google.
Micromax has the second largest smartphone seller in India, trailing Samsung.
