Microsoft has announced the launch of its mid-range Lumia 540 smartphone in India at Rs 10,199. The dual-SIM device will ship with Windows Phone 8.1 OS pre-installed, but will be upgraded to Windows 10 later this year.
Lumia 540 1The device features a 5-inch HD (1280×720 pixel) display and is powered by Qualcomm’s 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 200 series chip coupled to 1GB of RAM. The Lumia 540 also features 8GB of onboard storage and a microSD card slot (up to 128GB).
In terms of imaging, the device packs an 8MP primary camera at the rear with a ¼-inch sensor and an f/2.2 lens, while the front facing unit has a resolution of 5MP. Modes of connectivity include dual-SIMs, GPS, Wi-Fi and 3G, but the Lumia 540 lacks faster 4G.
The Lumia 540 goes on sale on May 18 and Microsoft has tied up with local service providers to offer compelling pre-order discounts and benefits. ISP Airtel will double the user’s’ data pack for absolutely free for a period of two months.

Further, with a tie up with Paytm, the online wallet will offer a cashback worth INR 1000 on recharges made via the Paytm app (Rs. 200 off every month for 5 months). Ola on the other hand Ola offers customers cashback of INR 800 on Ola money recharges (for Rs.200 cashback per recharge for the first four recharges of Rs.500 or higher).
Gaana.com is providing users with a free 2-month subscription of Gaana.com with unlimited song downloads while Microsoft itself will offer users of the Lumia 540 30GB of OneDrive Cloud storage.
It is to be seen if the Lumia’s lack of 4G connectivity hinders sales in India, or the lure of upgrading to Microsoft’s hotly awaited Windows 10 platform gets people excited.
