Telecom Roundup: Mobile Number Portability by December, 15mn subscribers added in August

Mobile Number Portability sees some hope – government has announced the first implementation date (for Category A circle) of December and the rest of the country by March of 2010.

Consumers, however, will be allowed to switch operators only 90 days after a connection is activated and can change operators within the circle in which they are registered, according to a final notification issued by Trai –source

15 million Wireless Subscribers added in August 2009

August witnessed an addition of 15 million subscribers – taking the total subscriber base to 494.07 million.

On the other hand, wireline subscriber base declined by 0.9 million (total subscriber base reaches 37.33 million).

While these numbers sound fancy, it’s a well known fact that telcos do inflate numbers in order to gain additional spectrum (and DoT is now planning to put up a mechanism to monitor the subscriber numbers of telecom operators)

Uninor, the brand name for Telenor-Unitech JV

Unitech Wireless and Norwegian telecom operator Telenor today announced that their mobile services in India will be named ‘Uninor’. Unitech Wireless has recently lined up a Rs 5,000 cr bridge finance with the State Bank of India, which includes bank gaurantees and a letter of credit that would help the company fund its 22 circle rollout – source
