Mobile Phone Landscape in India: Phone Launches Double; Phablet Launches Grow 10x

New mobile phone launches in India nearly doubled with Indian brands launching the most number of new devices. According to a report by 91mobiles, a mobile comparison website, between 68 brands in India, 957 new devices were launched in 2013. In comparison, last year, only 515 new phones were launched.


It also said that Indian brands are shifting towards higher price segments in 2013. Meanwhile, international brands rule the Rs 15k+ price band. Lava launched the highest number of new devices (63) with Intex and Maxx trailing close behind.

The launch of new phablets (devices with screen size 5″- 7″) saw a 10x increase as compared to 2012. In 2013, 53 new phablets were launched as compared to 5 in 2012.


Over a hundred quad core devices were launched as manufacturers took to Chinese company MediaTek’s affordable quad-core processor. 3G device launches increased by 2.5x and Android dominated the scene.

Samsung, Micromax and SOny were the most popular brands in 2013, said the report which used number of page views on their platform to gauge popularity of a device.

In 2013, 194 tablets were launched as compared to 172 in 2012. There are 61 tablet brands in the country out of which 11 are international brands.
