Within a day of the launch, MobMe witnessed an awesome 44,00 registrations – to keep the numbers in context, we are talking about local content subscription delivered on mobile (Mobme suggests that ~15% of users have gprs connectivity and the rest are just fine with sms content).
Quite lately, there have been discussions whether subscription based content works in India or not and players like smsgupshup, mytoday and mobme do reinforce that there is a viability in subscription business.
Quick stats from Other Players
- MyToday claims to send 12 million SMS a day.
- SMSGupShup’s user base stands at 12 million unique users, ~5 lakh communities ranging from finance, entertainment, business, news, education, spiritual, health and more.
As far as monetization is concerned, the CPM rates are still very low in mobile subscription business, but given the scale and vertical nature of content (and user intent), advertisers will pour in.
