New Call Telecom Acquires 70% stake in Nimbuzz

UK Based ISP New Call has acquired 70% stake in India headquartered instant mobile-messenger, mobile-advertisement service provider & VoIP app Nimbuzz for $175 million, as reported on ET.
Considering the increasing penetration of internet in India and with the rising adoption of smartphones for internet access, there is a huge scope for monetizing the internet based messaging and voice services in India. New Call has also revealed plans to make more acquisitions in fixed line, WiFi and eCommerce segments in India.
Nimbuzz will now act as New Call’s unit while Vikas Saxena will continue his position in the company as CEO. New Call has also announced that Nimbuzz will act as an incubator for New Call apps.
Nimbuzz has a strong user base of over 201 million users worldwide. This is a huge number when compared to rivals like Whatsapp that has user base of approximately 500 million and was acquired by Facebook for $19Billion. Viber has a user base of approximately 450 million and was acquired by Japanese Internet Giant Rakuten for $900 Million in February this year. Japanese Chat app Line had passed 400 million in user base in April this year.
India based free messenger app Hike has a user base of 20 million currently. Considering that the OTT players were eating into the telecom usage in the country, the telecom providers had asked TRAI that OTT services be charged for their usage but TRAI had voted against it.
Skype also has launched their new video messaging app Skype Qik recently with an intention to get a chunk of users in the instant messaging segment.
