The central government is not looking to force automobile companies to launch electric vehicles. The Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that the govt. does not plan to ban petrol or diesel vehicles. Instead, it wants the shift to zero-emission vehicles to be a natural progression.
This statement could bring in a much-needed respite to the Indian automobile industry which is reeling under immense pressure right now. Earlier it was alleged that the government wants to ban two-wheelers under 150 cc by 2025 and three-wheelers by 2023.
In related news, the Govt. is preparing the ground to set up GigaFactories to make EV batteries in India.
