Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal on Monday said that mobile phone subscribers will not have to pay roaming charges from next year, reports PTI.
According to the report, the Minister told reporters on the sidelines of the Indian Internet Governance Conference that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is ultimately responsible for the decision.
Earlier, the Finance Ministry had asked telecom department to submit a roadmap for implementation of ‘one nation free roaming’ which allows subscribers to use same number throughout the country without having to pay extra for it.
The telecom department is working on unified licence guidelines as part of the National Telecom Policy 2012, notified earlier. The idea is to have full mobile number portability and free nationwide roaming.
