Nokia has finally stated rolling out the Amber update for its Lumia range of phones, almost a month after HTC 8X users started receiving the GDR2 update for their phones. The Amber update is based on GDR2 but adds a lot more features to the Window 8 phones.
The update is already rolling out to Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 users across in selected countries across the world, including India and is expected to reach even the Lumia 520, Lumia 620 and Lumia 720 by the end of September to users across the world.
The update will be arriving OTA (over the air) and your Lumia will check automatically for the update, but you can also check manually by going to Settings => Phone Update.
The Amber update brings a whole lot of new feature to Windows Phone 8 on Lumia Phones, the main ones are:
Improved image processing
The image processing algorithms have been improved to offer better noise reduction, color reproduction, exposure control and autofocus. The Lumia 920 also gets a feature which allows you to adjust the ISO settings of the camera from 800 to 3200.
Nokia Smart Camera
This app which came with the Nokia Lumia 925, now comes to the other Lumia phones and helps in taking pictures involving people and movement. It includes various features like Best Shot, Action Shot, Motion Focus, Change Faces and also allows you to remove unwanted objects from your pictures. The Lumia 920 and Lumia 920 and Lumia 925 will also get the Nokia Pro Camera which will allow you to edit video quickly with the Nokia Video Trimmer app and upload them to YouTube with Nokia Video Upload.
Nokia Glance Screen
The Nokia Glance Screen brings a clock to your screen when the phone is inactive, along with indicators to show the battery level when running on a low battery or the phone is charging, and whether your phone is set to ‘silent’. This feature won’t be available on Nokia Lumia 520 and Lumia 625
Flip to silence and double-tap to unlock
Lumia users can now flip the phone over to mute an incoming call and also double tap the screen to unlock the phone.
In case you are running out of space on your phone and you want to free some up, you can now find out the biggest culprits and deal with them.
Faster map updates
HERE Maps will now only download map features that have been updated, meaning you don’t have to install whole countries.
While the GDR2 update on the HTC phones was a minor update, you can see that the Amber update for Lumia phones is a pretty big update and Nokia seems to be adding more features to Windows Phone 8 than other OEMs and other manufactures and this is one reason why it makes sense to choose a Lumia phone if you are going with Windows Phone 8.
This seems to be the season of software updates with smartphones. Android got bumped up to 4.3 Jelly Bean last month, even though it was a very minor update and iOS7, a major revamp of the Apple mobile operating system, is expected to hit consumers next month.
