Nokia partners with Vodafone to bill you for music downloads

Finnish phone-maker Nokia has partnered with cellphone network operator Vodafone India to offer an integrated billing solution on the Nokia Music store.

Vodafone India customers using the music service on their Nokia feature phones and Asha smartphones can renew their subscriptions using their Vodafone accounts and continue to download songs and albums from the Nokia Music Store.

Subscriptions can be renewed for 7 days for Rs 50, 30 days for Rs 99, and 90 days for Rs 250. Taxes extra.

Nokia claims that it is now the first independent music store in the country to offer integrated operator billing, along with billing via credit cards and vouchers.

In September, Nokia launched free music stream service in the US for Nokia Lumia users.

Rise of online music

Consumption of online music has seen consistent growth during the last 2-3 years. The explosion of smartphones and high speed 2G and 3G connections in urban markets has largely contributed to this. According to an industry report, digital music industry to grow at an expected CAGR of 22% till 2016.

The online music industry crossed one of the most important milestone 2011 when digital sales overtook physical sales for the first time ever in India (read : Online Music Industry in India). Currently around 55-60 % of music sale happens through digital route. Currently, mobile contributes around 85-90 % to the total digital music consumption in India.
