NPCI bars Truecaller from signing up new users on UPI

NPCI has clarified that Truecaller was barred from signing up new users on the UPI platform as soon as the bug, which registered users without their consent, was reported.

This decision was taken keeping the data privacy, safety and user security in mind. NPCI is said to be already investigating the issue. The Internet Freedom Foundation had earlier raised concerns around the bug and also re-iterated the need of a user-centric data privacy law in the country.

Truecaller has also stated that a bug was identified in the latest update and announced that a new version of the app will be released to fix the issue.
