Online Prepaid Recharge Report – Karnataka Spends Highest on Prepaid Recharge

E-commerce in India is rising and people are finding it easier to use to go online for mundane tasks like utility bill payments. Freecharge.in (our earlier coverage), a site that allows you to recharge your prepaid mobiles and gives discount coupons as freebies along with the transaction, has released a report analysing 100K transactions done on the site between Sept. and Oct 2010.

Online Prepaid Recharge : Key take-away:

1. Vodafone users spend the highest on prepaid talk-times at around 15% more than the overall avg. of Rs.128.

2. Aircel customers spent the least at around 21% lower than over all avg.

3. Karnataka is the highest spending circle – around 16% more than the avg.

4. SBI customers prefer using debit cards for online transactions whereas ICICI customers use their Netbanking account.

Note: Airtel is not covered in the report as the site does not support that.

What’s interesting is their clear lead by select banks in terms of online payments. SBI maintains a clear lead in Debit cards category whereas, ICICI is a leader in netbanking transactions. A similar pattern of bank’s share is seen in IRCTC reports released every month.

There is a clear distinction in avg. ticket size of the purchase. Debit card users were low spending users with an avg. ticket size of Rs.96.3. The avg. ticket size for transaction made through credit card is almost 83% higher than Debit card users. There are a lot new entrants in discount coupons and in online recharge space. Do you think the growth will continue in terms of users and new players?
