The worldwide PC market grew by 5% to 123.7 million units from the previous year in the first quarter of 2014, according to a report from Canalys, an independent research firm.
Tablet shipments, that accounts for 41% of the market, grew 21% percent year over year to 50.8 million units. There was a decline in laptops segment of 7% while the desktop category remained flat.
Amongst companies, Apple still maintains the lead, falling 16 percent year over year. The drop is mainly due to the fall in iPad shipping. Lenovo falls second with an increase from 10 to 12 percent shipping. The growth is attributed to the diversification of tablet portfolio. HP falls in the third place with a share of 11 percent in the market while Samsung occupies the fourth place.
Amongst geographical places, the Middle East had a strong growth rate of 100% followed by Greater China at 74% and Central and Eastern Europe at 47%. The US market was affected by the fall in iPad shipments by around 40%.
