Early and growth stage investor Lightspeed Venture Partners has invested $550k in Phone Warrior, an app which blocks mobile spam.
Lightspeed said on its blog that Phone Warrior is doing to plain old phone calls and messaging what Wikipedia did to encyclopedias and Waze did to radio road traffic reports and paper maps.
Phone Warrior is building a globally-relevant cloud-based platform to crowd-source mobile phone numbers and turbo-charge the value of this data through big data techniques, graph search and machine learning. Their product is currently visible on mobile devices through services such as caller-ID, spam blocking and call-blocking.
The app also has a global crowd sourced phone directory of over 100 million users which tells users who’s calling.
In September 2012, Phone Warrior crossed 50,000 downloads. By November last year, the company said it had blocked nearly 2.1 million phone calls and spam messages globally. It now says on its website that it has successfully blocked over 27 mn spam calls & messages.
The company was founded by Chandan Gupta & Vaibhav Padlikar and incubated at 91Springboard. “There is much more to come that leverages this core platform,” wrote Dev Khare, Principal at Lightspeed Venture Partners.
Lightspeed has previously invested in companies such as Asklaila, Dhingana, Fashionara, Limeroad, Indian Energy Exchange, ItzCash, OneAssist and Tutor Vista.
