But there is a catch. People can apply for the free phone online now, but the phones will be delivered only in the “second half of 2017”, that is after the results of the UP election is announced. A clear indication that the phones will be delivered, only if the party is elected back to power.
Named the Samajwadi Smartphone Scheme, “the beneficiaries of the scheme will be those who work in the private sector and whose annual income is less than Rs 2 lakh. Those whose parents have government jobs are not eligible. The selection process will be transparent and the smartphone will be delivered at the beneficiary’s doorstep.”
