RBI to verify WhatsApp’s local data rule compliance

Supreme court of India has asked RBI to verify if Facebook backed WhatsApp has fulfilled the data localization policies. RBI has been given six weeks to file a report.

This directive came in as a result of a petition filed last year, claiming that even though WhatsApp is gearing up to launch its payment services in India, it has not fulfilled the requisite data norms.

All payment companies are directed to store data within the country within 24 hours of the transaction, for unrestricted access by the officials. The government may also ask social media companies to set up a grievance officer in India.
