Music streaming service Rdio has acquired Dhingana, which had recently shut down its operations. The acquisition amount has not been disclosed as yet.
Dhingana founders Snehal Shinde and Swapnil Shinde will be joining the executive team at Rdio. The rest of the Dhingana team will also be joining Rdio.
Rdio, founded by Skype founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, will use Dhingana’s services and will have access to its 1 Mn plus library of songs in 42 Indian languages (some of these licenses would have expired by now).
Rdio’s global music services are available across 50 countries, but not in India. The acquisition of Dhingana will allow it to expand its reach in the Indian market. Rdio will also have access to Dhingana’s huge following.
Dhinagana had announced its shutdown in February 2014 exposing the unfavourable conditions for music streaming services in India.
