redBus.in has announced a strategic partnership with Expedia, one of the world’s largest travel websites. Post this partnership, redBus.in will power bus ticket booking functionality on expedia.co.in, their Indian portal and Expedia will get access to redBus’ inventory across more than 180,000 bus services which are operated by 900 operators across the country (redBus recently crossed the 1 crore ticket sales mark in India).
Expedia offers online bus reservation from over 80 carriers such as DTDC, Southern Travel and ITS to over 750 locations throughout India with around 6500 bus routes covered under the offering. Earlier in July this year, Expedia announced its partnership with Thomas Cook Visa & Passport Services to offer passport and visa assistance services to its consumers in India (the company also plans to open up its retail stores across the country).
Prior to this alliance, redBus tied up with Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) to sell their bus tickets.
redBus raised $6.5 Million Series C funding in May 2011 (led by Helion Venture and participated in by the existing investors, Seedfund and Inventus Capital Partners) and focused on growing the B2B business, i.e. BOSS software (Bus Operator Software Services) which they license to government owned operators.
