Rcom to raise call rates for bulk discount plans; Videocon may buy more spectrum [Telecom roundup]

Mobile TowerAnil Ambani owned telecom service provider Reliance Communications is gearing up to raise call rates of discounted calling plans, the company has said.

Gurdeep Singh, the chief executive officer of RCom’s wireless business was quoted in a financial daily as saying that the company is reducing the available talktime on fixed larger plans and effective rate per minute in a range between 20% and 60%.

Subscribers on lower bulk discount tarriff plans might have to foot a 5% increase in the bill.

Three months ago, telecom majors Airtel and Idea had cut freebies, promotional offers and free minutes of calling to improve revenue. Call rates in the country the lowest in the world and it significantly impacts the profits of telecom operators.

Videocon may buy more Spectrum for National Presence

Videocon Mobile Services, which owns spectrum in 7 circles in the country, will look at acquiring more spectrum for a pan India roll out, Arvind Bali, the company’s director and chief executive officer said in an interview with a financial daily.

“We are currently focusing on rolling out services in three remaining circles UP west,UP east and Bihar. Once we get these circles operational,and taking forward our pan-India roll out ambition,we shall definitely look at acquiring spectrum for new circles,however in a phased manner,by picking select circles,forming a corridor,” he told the newspaper.
