Rinema Wants To Be The Online Home of Cinema Lovers

RinemaGrishma Udani graduated from IIT Kanpur and co-founded Whirlybird Electronics, a hardware startup. The startup bagged clients like the Indian Navy, ISRO and Honeywell. But the movie buff inside her and passion for cinema, made her choose a different path. Following her love, she started Rinema, an online medium catering to niche cinema fans across the globe.

The portal was launched in beta in February this year, as an invite-only service. Yesterday, it went live for the public. Rinema.com is a dedicated online library which provides all information about movies. It’s a content aggregation platform for movies.

The startup maintains a database of movies, and helps users manage and discover movies using search filters such as genres, languages, ratings and release year. Currently, it has a list of more than 1, 70,000 movies which features more than 2, 00,000 actors and directors from Hollywood, Bollywood and other film industries.

Users can also add and edit movies to their accounts, making the site a huge repository for movies. Content generation by users will help the portal maintain a more exhaustive list of movies which otherwise could have been missed. Users have so far added more than 1, 20,000 movies. The site helps cinema buffs manage their movies in form of a list. One can add a movie he/she wants to watch or has already watched.

Besides acting as a movie management library, the platform also helps people discover new and latest movies based on their interest. Be it latest releases in cinemas or a decade old release, one can find the film of their interest.

The movie page shows detailed information, like story synopsis, casts, crew, ratings, release year etc. Most of the data is sourced from Freebase which has an open database of movies and Wikipedia. Also using crawling algorithms, data is taken from various movie streaming portals and is added manually for certain entries.

Viewers can review and rate movies or follow other users. On the basis of the ratings a user does, the portal suggests customized preferences and other users which have similar movies in their list.

The startup plans to monetize from movie makers, distributors and online movie portals as it can provide customized information on users interest and behavior for targeted promotions. Of course advertising by brands can be the other option.

We tried out the site and found that a user has to rate a minimum of 20 movies (needs lot of patience) in order to get recommendations of like-minded people (called Taste Buddies). You can follow these users or can check their collection and add movies from it to your list.

The portal suggests movies based on your ratings and reviews, you can add it to your collection or can mark “To Watch” or “Watched”, and can give a review to it.

Existing players  like Metataste and Rotten Tomatoes already aggregate information around movies and cinema, and help in content discovery.

How effectively Rinema will create its space in the niche of cinema fans will be interesting to watch.
