Samsung Launches Its Galaxy S6 & S6 Edge In India; Prices Start At Rs 49,900 [No Love For Google]

The iPhone 6’s biggest competitors are here, but would you buy into Samsung’s promise.

Samsung has launched its new flagship Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones in India at prices starting at Rs 49,900 and Rs 58,900 respectively. The devices will go head to head with the Apple’s iPhone 6, which is now available at a starting price of around Rs 46,000.

The S6 and S6 edge are apparently built from the ground up, and ditch Samsung’s trademark plasticky exteriors (that have irked consumers) in favour of a complete metal and glass construction. The Apple iPhone 6 too was a complete rethink of the iPhone, with a larger screen, new design and more.
Both Samsung and Apple devices went in for curved edges, but unlike the iPhone 6’s all metal back, the S6 and S6 Edge feature glass backs – a concept that Apple brought in with the iPhone 4.

Both the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge feature 5.1-inch displays, which are not only larger than the iPhone 6’s 4.7-inch screen, but also have a far higher QHD (1440 x 2560 pixels) resolution when compared to the iPhone’s 750 x 1334 pixel screen. The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have an insane ppi of 577, while the iPhone 6 makes do with 326ppi.
The S6 Edge’s display even features dual curves at its edge, which don’t really do as much as the Note Edge’s single curve, but apparently makes it easier to interact with content at the edge of the screen.

In terms of power, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge come equipped with Samsung’s own octa-core Exynos 7420 chip rather than a Qualcomm SoC as its predecessors have. Out of those 8 cores, four are 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53, while the rest are 2.1 GHz Cortex-A57, which are manufactured using the world’s first 14nm process.
While significantly more powerful than the 1.4GHz dual-core A8 processor in the iPhone 6, the new Galaxy device run on Android 5.0 Lollipop which is far more resource intensive than Apple’s iOS.
It’s a similar story when it comes to the amount of RAM the Samsung S6 and S6 Edge employ – 3GB of to be precise – which is thrice as much as what the iPhone 6 gets. Further, Samsung has now switched over to DDR4 RAM, which is supposedly 80% faster than DDR3. However, performance is something we’re not going to be able to call out until we use both devices side-by-side.

Imaging duties on the Galaxy phones will be handled by a 16MP primary camera at the rear, while the shooter on the iPhone 6 features a paltry 8MP resolution in comparison. It’s no secret however that Apple’s cameras have so far put all other smartphone shooters to shame, but the iPhone 6 does lack OIS which the new Galaxy phones gain.
On the front, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are equipped with 5MP cameras that can shoot video in 1080p. Apple hasn’t felt the need to chase the selfie obsessed buyers however, with the iPhone 6’s shooter featuring a 1.2MP resolution.

Samsung has stolen a play out of Apple’s book when it comes to on-board storage. Given the lack of a microSD card slot on the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, the company offers each device in three variants – 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. The iPhone 6 in comparison comes in 16/64/128GB flavours.
Moreover, Samsung is boasting of having the fastest transfer speeds with new flash storage tech it employs on the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

It’s in the battery department where the Samsung phones shine, with the S6 packing in a 2550mAh battery and the S6 Edge featuring a slightly larger 2,600mAh battery. The iPhone 6 on the other hand has a 1810 mAh battery, and despite all that optimisation of iOS, the devices has failed to deliver battery performance on-par with other Android devices.
The new Samsung devices feature quick charging that can provide 4 hours of battery life with just 10 min of charging. The company claims the new devices will also charge twice as quick as the iPhone 6 from empty. Like Apple’s iPhones however the new Galaxy phones lack removable batteries, which has pissed off some Galaxy loyalists.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge couldn’t be more different from Apple’s iPhone 6 when it comes to the underlying software. The Samsung devices run on Google’s Android 5.0 Lollipop featuring TouchWiz, while the iPhone 6 runs on iOS 8+. This time around however (thanks to popular demand) Samsung has rolled back TouchWiz customizations.
Being Samsung, the company couldn’t just let Google win, so the S6 and S6 Edge now come pre-installed with Microsoft services such as OneDrive, etc. Software preference is however still down to what consumers are used to, so you can’t really compare the devices on this front.

Again trying to match the Apple iPhone 6, Samsung has enhanced the fingerprint sensor that’s housed in the home button of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. Users don’t have to swipe their fingers over the button anymore, just placing their thumbs over it will suffice.
The Galaxy devices may be refined with Samsung looking all the essentials, but it still features that gimicky heart rate sensor.
Not leaving out enterprise users that have so jumped onto the Apple ship, the S6 and S6 Edge feature Samsung’s KNOX which boasts of defence level encryption. Enterprise users will also get 100GB of free OneDrive storage.
