Shazam, Saavn Form Partnership To Better Indian Music Discovery Experience

SaavnUS-based Indian digital music service Saavan has signed an exclusive partnership with UK-based Shazam Entertainment Ltd, which offers music and media apps which enable users to discover, explore, buy and share music and also TV shows in some countries.

The partnership will give users a great new way to discover the latest tracks from their favorite artists in Bollywood and other popular genres such as bhangra, devotional, ghazals, Carnatic and Indipop. It will also recognize music in regional languages including Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, and Bhojpuri.

Saavn’s vast library has already been incorporated into Shazam’s music database, so one can use the Shazam app to identify local content straight away.

The Indian music market is experiencing tremendous growth worldwide, and is expected to grow by 98% over the next five years,” said Will Mills, Director of Music and Content for Shazam.

Users will be able to quickly find out the name and artist of their favorite tracks and will also include an easy way to purchase tracks from iTunes. Till now, neither Saavn, Gaana or Dhingana, offered download and purchasing of the music streamed. Hungama Digital’s music app does offer purchase of music via operator billing. One can also purchase music using iTunes or Flipkart’s Flyte.

They can also share their finds with friends on Facebook, Twitter or Google+ via Shazam.

Saavan says they hope this partnership will reduce music piracy in India.

The Indian music industry is one the world’s fastest-growing, with revenues increasing by 60% each year. Companies like Saavn have seen year-on-year growth of 100% for streaming devotional music, 300% for regional music and more than 1000% growth of independent music.

Saavn’s music catalog now includes over 1 million Indic tracks. Saavn’s had only recently introduced Saavn Pro, an ad-free, offline play option for subscribers. Shazam’s music database currently has over 27 million tracks.
