Snatchking is a generic classifieds site that has listed all the ads from newspapers of Times Group, Midday and Dainik Bhaskar. They also power the classifieds section on some of the Times group sites and Mid-day.com.
Apart from this there is nothing to talk about SnatchKing. Although they have tried to give the site a very web2.0 feel with lots of Ajax but that has actually become a little annoying for navigation. They have missed the point that classifieds site in India actually get traffic through efficient SEO.
What’s remarkable here is the way they have developed the product. They power the classifieds section of the newspaper sites and now that they have the access to data they have created a stand alone product. I wouldn’t be surprised if the newspaper sites are not even aware of this.
A very similar strategy was materailized by Bookmyshow. They started as Bigtree Entertainment, to provide a hosted box-office solution for Cinema’s and their websites. When they had enough partners and access to their inventory, bookmyshow was launched.
This bottom up strategy can be implemented in other verticals as well. Some of the startups in the food ordering service are already doing this and there seems to be a lot of potential as the software services injects regular revenue in the system, while you can create a more mature web product. But again, the focus shouldn’t be lost.
Give Snatchking a spin and do share your views on this strategy.
