Electronics major Sony has launched the Sony Xperia Tablet Z in India at the whopping price of Rs 46,990 and will be available in stores from this weekend. It was first introduced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February this year.
The tablet is available on online retailers like Flipkart and Infibeam for Rs 44,990 so we assume that will be the market price when it hits the stores.
The Xperia Tablet Z is water-and-dust-resistant and runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. One of the main selling points of the Android-powered tablet is the water resistance to 1 meter depth for 30 minutes and robust built quality.
It has a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 resolution display and is powered by a quad-core 1.5GHz processor.
It has an 8 megapixel rear camera. According to Sony, the camera is the first backside-illuminated sensor to be used in a tablet. It has a 2.2-megapixel front camera and 16 GB of internal storage which can be expanded using a microSD card. It has a massive 6,000 mAh battery.
The tablet is just 6.9mm making it the thinnest tablet in the market. The tablet supports NFC, Wi-Fi, IR and Bluetooth.
As an introductory offer, Sony India is also offering the Xperia Tablet Z with a free 16GB microSD card, a premium case worth Rs 2,990 and 6-month EMI schemes with zero percent interest.
At Rs 46,990, this is a very pricey tablet. While the iPad is the market leader, low-cost Android tablets have been making an impact in the tablet market. But at this price, Sony is definitely going to find it hard to find customers. We don’t think the water resistance commands such a premium. Another issue that Sony will have to tackle is that while there are thousands of apps optimized for the iPad, Android has very few. This is one of the major factors holding back Android from getting a larger share of the premium tablet market.
A couple of months back, Sony had launched the Sony Xperia Z phone for Rs 38,990, which is also dust and water resistant.
