Surat to be India’s first GPS mapped city.

Rockfeller foundation under the Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN) project has initiated plans to GPS map the whole city of Surat covering an area of 350 sq KM. source

Under the initiative every structure/building in the city of Surat will have a unique identity. The data will be used during disaster relief operations. The system will be developed in collaboration with Google. If everything works as per plans then Surat will be the first city in the world to be fully GPS mapped.

In total 10 Asian cities are selected for the initiative including Indore and Jabalpur as well.
