Generally, I keep an eye on what I am paying, at what rate and so on, just to satisfy my curiosity. Recently, I am hearing from a lot of people that cab is cheaper than an auto then why should they take an auto? So I thought why not analyse Uber trips that I have taken in past 1 year.
Before getting into the data, here is my user profile: I generally use cab for functional benefit that is convenient transport. I live in Bangalore and I have used Uber 42 times in the past 1 year. 37 out of total 42 trips with Uber were with UberGo and I have paid surge price of 1.3x only 3 times for these 37 trips.
Just for putting facts across, an auto in Bangalore is Rs 13 per Km. Uber claims their rides start at Rs 7 per Km, Ola claims similar numbers whereas our traditional cabs like Meru and others claim somewhere between Rs 16 to Rs 20 per Km. Does that 16 to 20 look like double the charge to you?
Let me ask you a question, how much you get charged per Km for an UberGo in Bangalore? Certainly it is not Rs 7–8 per Km and you know that. But have you analysed your total trips with Uber and per Km rate that you are paying?
Let’s look at my trips.
So here are numbers for 37 trips on UberGo that I took in last 1 year.
Total amount on UberGo: Rs 7874
Total Km on UberGo: 514 Km
What this means is, I have paid an average of Rs 15.3 per Km to Uber for UberGo. How it is Rs 15.3 and not Rs 7? For example, I took a trip which was 10.78 Km. Base fare (Rs 35) + Km charge (Rs 76) + Time charge (44) = Total (155) which comes to effective rate of Rs 14.4 per Km. So this is what I have been telling people, don’t think it is cheap, quality generally don’t come at cheaper rates.
So next time you tell your autowalla that a cab comes at cheaper price than his auto, remember this.
Okay, let’s look at some more interesting things.
I have paid total of 1610 rupees of base fare out of the total 7874 rupees.
What this means is, though we generally ignore base fare but base fare accounts for 20% of your total Uber bill.
Let’s see which trip was the most expensive from UberGo category in Bangalore? and which one was the least expensive in terms of rate/Km.
Least expensive was 19.8 Km ride on UberGo (no surge) at Rs 12.1 /Km
Most expensive was 3.14 km ride on UberGo (no surge) at Rs 22.9 /Km
As you can see, lower the Km that you travel, higher you pay per Km.
So next time you think you just want to go to a near by place and want to take Uber, think again. That will be the costliest trip you would take on Uber.
So the bottom line is, be it Meru, mega, Ola or any other cab, you are going to be charged at more than Rs 15 per Km whichever brand you pick. Also, I have (almost) NEVER paid surge price to Uber, but if you are that customer who doesn’t mind paying surge then this number could easily to Rs 18 per Km.
Just for curious people out there, this article is NOT paid by Ola. And I use Uber for its consistent quality experience.
