"Maybe I'm misinformed, but I was told that 30% of parts must be locally sourced and the supply doesn't yet exist in India to support that.", said Elon Musk on Tesla India plans.
This ofcourse means that Tesla isn't launching in India anytime soon.
The state of electric vehicles in India
I recently bought a car and looked at all the different models of Electric vehicles - and let me just tell you this.
First of all, there aren't too many options and secondly, the current electric vehicles in India lack in engineering (Mahindra Reva/E2O is at max an electric scooter when it comes to performance). They lack design focus. And worst of all, there aren't too many charging stations.
By 2030, the govt expects to sell only electric vehicles. If that has to happen, we need to decide between our current capability (of supply/infrastructure) vs. letting companies like Tesla show us the way.
Right now, Indian companies need somebody to create a market - Mahindra (and others) alone won't be able to do. They have other priorities and EVs are more of a CSR / PR game for them.
Let's not miss the electric vehicle revolution by mixing with #MakeInIndia agenda?
