But, I strongly feel that they are just scratching the surface of data. Google has a treasure trove of data which they can ( and they might ) use for a much bigger "WOW" factor.
There are zillion of other valuable information that a traveller should be aware of before embarking upon a journey.
For example, take the "downloadable" feature of new Google Trips. You reach a certain destination and do not find the network signal but you are immensely happy about the fact that you have pre-downloaded the plan.
But, think about it, won't it be of much higher benefit if you can check whether you have the Network signal in the exact route that you choose to follow? Not a signal location but on your specific route.
Also, more than just availing offline trip plans, a network connection is a life-saver for emergency situations and one is pretty much an island without it.
