Alright folks. We tried harder, but we couldn’t live without you.
We realized that building a community play in India is very challenging - but a very very rewarding experience.
We launched the community version last year and rolled it to a subdomain later - largely because we wanted to build a pure platform-ish experience on the front page.
But frankly, a magazine styled community ain’t a community - it is just another media property (no matter what tech one uses).
The decision to bring back the community is mainly driven by the fact that I have been mad and lately, hopeless about the quality of discussions in India's product/startup ecosystem and the only way to fix this is by doing our bit.
NextBigWhat’s strength lies in community and starting today, you will only see the community forum on the front page (all our earlier articles reside on https://mag.nextbigwhat.com).
To quickly share, I was having a discussion with few active community members (to validate my hypothesis around communities) and @realmccoy 's point just hit the nail on (my) head.
the core of human spirit since birth is to be heard and then to be listened.
people need something to connect to, original; something which is just like them, something which does not mock at their intelligence.
something which makes them feel that they are human, they are not alone and it's ok to be themselves.
even if it means, it's ok to be stupid!
And that’s NextBigWhat community!! The only place to be UnPluggd and stupid (being fake intelligent, like all the fake unicorns hasn’t taken anyone anywhere anyways :))
We aren’t going back on this - that’s my promise to the community.
I have never shied away from experiments. Experiments move things forward (can always do a slimy/cheesy media business like our competitors and make loads of money).
I settle only when am done with all experiments; and today, we announce the final version of NextBigWhat front page.
The front page of NextBigWhat will remain the community platform. Always.
Of course, there will be design iterations - but the platform remains the same (FYI: this runs on Discourse). Having said that, we are launching the newsy/mag as a separate property (on May 25th) - with a very niche focus.
What’s new with the community?
Insightful discussions / debates and lots of sharing.
But the most important thing we are bringing to the table (slowly, but effectively) is buyer persona. The notion of ‘Bharat’ - as a market, as a potential play. These will be done anecdotally to start with (just be with the flow/you will realize what I am talking about as we go along)!
If you are a founder, a product geek, a curious mind - this is the platform for you.
Like Gandhi said : Be the change you want to see in the world, I am doing this (betting it all) to build a strong community of doers, geeks and tinkerers.
Last but not the least.
Welcome to NextBigWhat community! Let’s talk / debate / learn from each other. If you have any suggestions - please reach out to me directly : firstname.lastname@example.org
Sharing this in case you want to laugh at us (for the to-and-fro changes)
PS: It's okay to be skeptical about these changes - feel free to ask me any qns.
