Thanks for asking this. Let me share why we do what we do.
When a new member joins, the first few articles are always "manually approved". Why is that? We get tons of spams - right from Astrology babas to escort girls to seo spammers (min 20 / day).
We want to block spammers at the first very step. There is 'no mercy' policy here.
But then, It's not just about bot spammers. Several founders / marketers / PR folks (i.e.human spammers) just want to plug their product/company.
We don't allow that. We will never allow that. Think of a platform as a garden.
When everyone starts plucking the flowers, we are left with a garden even we wouldn't like to visit.
Most of the community groups on Facebook are a living example of this crap. They are full of promos and there is hardly any meaningful discussion over there.
The thing is that we can automate spam control - but difficult to control the 'spam intent' of fellow humans. And the only way to do is by manually controlling the first few posts.
We don't edit your content. At max, we will edit the title (to make it more readable and useful for others, like this post iteself) or add a picture to add more weight to your thread. I repeat, we don't alter any content!
Here is what we also do:
Once a member is active and his/her comments add value to the community, we immediately upgrade the member to the next 'Trust level' - that is, off the 'manual approval' process. Sometimes it takes a while, sometimes it is just within few hours - it depends largely on the first few interactions with the platform.
These are the trust levels - it does take time to become 'regular' - and we are working on specific opportunities that will open up only for 'regular' members.
We will expedite the process. We haven't done a good job of updating users on why certain posts were removed. but we will definitely improve on this.
What We Really Want This Platform To Be?
We don't aim to build another social network - i.e. millions of users, just promoting their shit or a media company running on cheap pageviews.
We aim to create a nice place to hangout - talk/discuss/read/learn/debate and have a good time with fellow member.
