The total number of telephone subscribers as of March 2016, are more than 1000 million, according to a report released by TRAI. The total urban telephone subscribers are 609 million while in rural areas the total number stands at 449 million.
The overall teledensity also increased to 83.36 at the end of Mar-16.
Among the wireless subscribers' market share, the private access service providers held 91.30% market share whereas BSNL and MTNL, had a market share of only 8.70%.
But, BSNL and MTNL held 72.42% of the wireline market share.
The report also added that the number of broadband subscribers increased to 149.75 million in March, with a monthly growth rate of 3.37%.
Top five service providers constituted 83.52% market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of March. These service providers included Bharti Airtel (38.47 million), Vodafone (27.76 million), Idea Cellular (22.92 million),BSNL (20.35 million) and Reliance Communications Group (15.57 million).
Orissa, recorded the highest growth rate in wireless subscribers in March, while Delhi, Mumbai, A.P. and Karnataka showed a decline.
