NextBigWhat has changed and we request you to read the note below for details. We thank you for all your support and love across all these years.
Today is a big day for NextBigWhat and an extremely important day for me as a founder.
Today, we change the way we work @NextBigWhat (and we are putting everything at risk!).
Not in an incremental fashion. But in a way that reboots the entire startup ecosystem.
We are going back to 'being curious', that is 'asking tough questions' to founders, investors and everybody else.
We are back to being a platform that engages in a meaningful conversation (and NOT just reporting funding / launch news).
We continue to engage deeply with the community.
We stop being a pure media play (that is, no more one-way street).
We are ..NextBigWhat and from now onwards, NextBigWhat Is YOU!
That is, a pure community platform which aims to foster amazing discussions and debates related to the startup and tech ecosystem in the country.
Powered By You.
That is, you can create topics / engage / debate with others in the community with NextBigWhat playing the enabler role (and not an editorial role).
We continue to cover news etc - but the larger picture is all about 'YOU' and the open format discussions around product management / growth hacking / startups related topics.
What does this actually mean?
First things first : I didn't start Pluggd.in / NextBigWhat to build a media business.
I started because I had a few things to share.
I started because I was really curious!
I started because I had certain perspective on products / startups.
And eventually we built a community that was one of its kind in the country.
So why break/change things when nothing is broken?
My Biggest Regret
In the last 3 years, we actually tried to be somebody else. That is, a media play.
Not our DNA. Not our soul. Not us.
Sorry. I betrayed myself. Everyday, I tried assuring myself that 'media play' is what will work/scale. But here is what it is : I wrote not more than 20 (serious) posts in the last 6 months.
Because the format (of posts) never appealed to expressing opinions / asking questions. Because somewhere the audience expectation was to give them things that are 'correct (but not necessarily right)'.
And let me tell you this :
* In India, many startup/tech media plays have become a pure paid ones. The urge to monetize is more than the urge to add value.
* When it comes to adding value, it's not about sucking up to founders/investors.
* Value (of a media platform) lies in asking '(tough) questions' (“Strength lies in differences, not in similarities”).
- Value lies in 'agreeing to disagree'. True for founders. True for the industry.
- Value lies in bringing a diverse community together.
A community of founders, doers and tinkerers.
We could have easily launched a forum - but we want to go all-in.
Because startup ecosystem needs an engagement platform.
We all need a platform that goes beyond stories and news - and brings together founders, ProductGeeks and the industry together.
And I do know that it's a big risk and our competitors are out there partying but then my entire life has been governed by this:
“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!” [Hunter S. Thompson]
I'd rather take this BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) risk (of building the most amazing community of founders and doers) than try to fit-in to a media play, which we certainly don't relate to.
Community is what NextBigWhat stood for and community is what NextBigWhat will focus on.
“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”- Mother Teresa
