I've no experience in building a subscription based Business. However, I'm a customer for few (more on the B2B side) and can give my perspective as a customer.
We were actually searching for a food company to which we can subscribe for all 3 meals - we kind of want to outsource the food thing (cooking/cook + groceries shopping) - tried cooks, but feel like there is some hassle too. All we are looking for is a simple food (no fancy stuff) - healthy and tastes good with some reasonable pricing. We are okay to a pay a bit more compared to the groceries cost + cook cost.
The point here is - the subscription Business should really take out a huge pain point - and it should be something that happens daily or 2-3 times a week. And pricing does play a role - as we are not looking to subscribe for the homemade food start-ups.
We earlier tried some start-up in Bangalore who delivers dairy products on a subscription basis (weekly/monthly). Initially, we loved it and I do remember recommending to many other friends. But over a period of time the quality suffered - the milk was not delivered for 2-3 days! We were okay with Bigbasket screwing up a couple of times but not this one - as we did not have milk - high stake.
For me payments was not a barrier - one click which accepts paytm / debit card should do. A transparent orders page with all my previous transactions to track should be enough. And ensure there is some communication - SMS / email with all subscription details mentioned each time you deduct the amount.
I hope this is useful for you.
