Tamil Nadu bans online gaming that involves betting

The Tamil Nadu government has brought out an ordinance banning online gaming involving betting in the backdrop of a recent spate in suicides by gamers, who had allegedly lost money online. “The people who are found gaming will be punished with a fine amount of Rs. 5,000/- and six months imprisonment.” The ordinance further goes on to ban “electronic transfer of funds” used for wagering or betting, distribute the winnings, prize money

The Madras High Court, issued notices to Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly and some notable film actors for promoting online sports apps that have made youngsters gamble for money. Hearing a petition filed by Advocate Mohammed Rizvi alleging that online gaming has adverse effects on children and is leading to addiction and is forcing people to commit suicide, the court blamed the owners for using celebrities to entice youths to download the app.
