Exclusive: GupShup Pivoting to TeamChat Enterprise App. Will That Work?

SMSGupshup which has raised $47mn funding so far pivoted to a messaging app Gupshup in 2013, but that didn’t seem to work in company’s favor (the Gupshup android app was last updated around 5 months back and has been downloaded less than half a million times).teamchat

The team has now launched TeamChat, a mobile-only enterprise collaboration tool for the global audience.  Also, from what it seems like, Gupshup will shut down and the team will pivot to TeamChat (the Android icon on the site, Gupshup.me points to TeamChat app store link).

Teamchat (Android-only, to start off) enables messaging among teams of any size, by structuring the messages to reduce clutter.

This is done through “smart” messages that aggregate, organize and summarize the responses, updating themselves without adding new messages to the conversation stream. Examples include polls, surveys, sales reports, registration forms, lookups and more.

TeamChat has backend APIs and connectors to enable integration with existing ERP, CRM, CSR, SFA and other enterprise systems.

SMSGupshup last raised funding in 2011 led by US-based venture capital firm Tenaya Capital and included existing investors Lloyd George, New Horizons,Charles River Ventures, Helion Ventures and Globespan Capital Partners.

At one point in time, SMSGupshup had more than 50 million (SMS) userbase, but thanks to TRAI regulations, the company was forced to pivot.

Given that the market is crowded (and well funded) with enterprise productivity apps, TeamChat definitely is a tough act to execute.

Aside, this is probably the fourth pivot of Webaroo?
