Technology helps revive a century-old traditional craft in Tamilnadu

A software powered electric handloom is helping weavers revive a 100-year-old prestigious Pathamadai mat making craft. The business came to a stagnancy because of lack of interest from the next generation and laborious efforts required by the weavers.

On the instructions of Tamilnadu Handicrafts Development Corporation, Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG), IIT Madras has built a new Electronic Jacquard Handloom. This machine lets the weavers upload customized designs and has reduced the weaving time to one-third.

According to the report, the use of this new-age technology has improved the working conditions of the weavers and increased their income as well.
